Have you been asking yourself, what is that sound coming from my heating system? Does it sound like leprechauns have set up shop in your HVAC system? Do you hear leprechauns banging when the system turns on? Or whistling lil’ fellows when it is running? Or tapping sounds from their little feet dancing? You may be hearing noises that seem to be coming from little leprechauns, but it is more likely that your HVAC system is trying to tell you something!
If your HVAC system is banging it may be a sign of issues with the system’s pipes. The pipes may have been sized incorrectly during the installation process or placed too close to other objects.
Damaged or worn out pipes, parts or valves may also be letting air into your system’s pipes where it should not be able to get in.
A whistling sound is most likely caused by an issue with air flow within your system. Air may be escaping when leaving the system to travel throughout your home through a damaged duct, faulty part or mis-sized fan.
The system may also be having trouble bringing air back through the intake because of duct issues or blocked return vents. Dirty filters can also block air flow.
A tapping noise is most likely due to pipes that are rapidly changing temperature without the proper insulation or clamping. Having your pipes insulated and secured can easily fix the issue.
If you are hearing any of the above sounds – or any sounds at all – from your HVAC system we strongly recommend that you call in a professional HVAC technician to examine the system and pinpoint the problem.
